from the book "Varför växer gräset" (Why does the grass grow) by Hallberg and Kull.

Star Fish.

A tourist was walking on a deserted beach in Mexico. Soon he could see someone else in the distance and as he came closer, he saw that it was a man from one of the villages nearby. This man was constantly throwing things in the water.

The tourist thought the man was throwing flat stones in the water, trying to make them skid across the surface, but when he came closer, he could see it was starfish. The beach was covered in starfish that had been washed up by the waves.

The man explained to the tourist that if he didn’t throw the starfish back in the sea, they would die of lack of oxygen. The tourist was baffled by the man’s ambition and asked if he didn’t think it a worthless cause.

- There must be thousands of starfish on this beach, let alone all the other beaches, he said. What does it matter if you stand here and throw back just some of them?

The man smiled, picked another one up and said: - It matters to this one.
